Jazz Harmony 2
This 12-week course will discover the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic language of contemporary music and prepare students for higher level jazz harmony courses. Unlike classical western harmony, Jazz Harmony is fluid, free and functional. Students will learn not only how to analyze their favorite songs using jazz harmony, but also to compose new songs and reharmonize old tunes using it.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Jazz harmony is a course that focuses on the unique chord progressions, voicings, and substitutions used in jazz music. Students will learn about the role of chords in creating a sense of movement and tension in a jazz composition or improvisation. The course will cover the various chord scales and modes used in jazz, as well as the function of upper structure triads and extended chords.
In addition to learning about the theoretical foundations of jazz harmony, students will also have the opportunity to practice applying these concepts through the analysis of jazz standards and the creation of their own chord progressions. The course will also touch on the role of melody and counterpoint in jazz, as well as the use of non-diatonic chords and altered dominant chords.
Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to listen to and analyze recordings of famous jazz musicians, as well as to create and perform their own jazz compositions. By the end of the course, students will have a deep understanding of the elements of jazz harmony and will be able to apply this knowledge in their own musical creations.
